National Day of Truth and Reconciliation – September 30, 2025

Truth and Reconciliation Day – September 30

Each year on September 30, Canada observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day honours the children who never returned home from residential schools, the Survivors, and their families and communities. It is a time to remember the tragic legacy of residential schools and to recognize their ongoing impacts. Public commemoration is an essential step in the reconciliation process.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was established as a federal statutory holiday through amendments made by Parliament.

Wear Orange
September 30 is also Orange Shirt Day, a movement led by Indigenous communities to raise awareness about the intergenerational impacts of residential schools. The orange shirt symbolizes the loss of culture, freedom, and self-esteem that many Indigenous children endured. It stands as a reminder that “Every Child Matters.” On this day, Canadians are encouraged to wear orange in solidarity and to honour Survivors and their families.

You can also download resources and share how you are marking the day on social media using the hashtag #NDTR.
