World Refugee Day Regina - Tuesday June 20th, 2017 - City Plaza

Will you stand #WithRefugees!

On Tuesday, June 20th, 2017

from 12:00 to 1:00 pm,

the Regina Open Door Society (RODS) will be hosting a World Refugee Day (WRD) event.

Please join us at the City Square Plaza Stage at noon.

The program will include 2017 newcomer bursary awards followed by entertainment.

Information will be provided on World Refugee Day, the plight of refugees and their contributions to Regina.

Imagine what it’s like to be a refugee, forced to flee persecution, civil war or violence and leaving behind everything – home, family and friends. This year’s main message aims to bring the public closer to the story: Refugees are people like you and me who have been forced to flee but who have the same hopes and dreams.

On World Refugee Day we commemorate the strength, courage and perseverance of refugees. WRD marks a key moment for the public to show support for families forced to flee. Each day war forces thousands of people like you and me to flee their homes leaving everything behind except their hopes and dreams for a safer future.  Please remember the 60 million refugees globally who are trying to pick up the pieces of once-peaceful lives.

Office of the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees)
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country. It also has a mandate to help stateless people.

Since 1950, the agency has helped tens of millions of people restart their lives. Today, a staff of more than 9,300 people in 123 countries continues to help and protect millions of refugees, returnees, internally displaced and stateless people.
