Sask. ends 2017 with slight increase in number of people in labour force

Statistics Canada has released its December employment data.

Here are some of Saskatchewan’s numbers:  

562,300- People employed in Saskatchewan in December, an increase of 900 from November, but 700 less than the previous December  

37,000 - People unemployed  

6.4%Unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted)

68.1%Labour force participation rate (a percentage of the overall working-age population)

599,300- People in Saskatchewan’s labour force in December, 4,100 more people than the previous month

1,000- Fewer people were in the labour force compared with the previous December

11% Decline in employment seen in two different fields since the previous December — in professional, scientific and technical services, and in agriculture

3% Drop in construction jobs since November, or 1,500 jobs

4%Drop in real estate, finance, insurance and leasing jobs since November, or 1,100 jobs

6%Increase in public administration jobs since last December, or 2,000 jobs

8% Increase in business, building and support services jobs since last December, or 1,100 jobs

13.3% Unemployment rate among youths

81,000 - Youths in the labour market in December

7.3% Unemployment rate among men

4.9%Unemployment rate among women

14.6%Unemployment rate among Aboriginal people, 1.5 per cent higher than in November

53,300 - Aboriginal people in the labour force in December, a 62.6 per cent participation rate

2,800 - Fewer Aboriginal people in the labour force compared with the previous year, a five-percent drop

4.2% Regina’s unemployment rate, 0.8 per cent lower than the year before.

7.5%Saskatoon’s unemployment rate, 0.2 per cent higher than the year before

3%Growth in public sector jobs since the previous December
