Refugee Sponsorship Information Event – Very Successful!

On behalf of the Refugee Sponsorship Training Program (RSTP), Newcomer Welcome Centre (NWC) and the Regina Region Local Immigration Partnership (RRLIP) we would like to sincerely thank those who attended last week’s session about Canada’s Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program.

At the event we heard from individuals who came to Canada as refugees, those who have privately sponsored refugees to Saskatchewan and experts in the field of private sponsorship.

Below are some of the highlights from the evening:

• With the number of refugees worldwide reaching a record high this year, the need for Canadians to help through private sponsorship is very high

• There are currently many refugees living right here in Regina who are desperate to be reunited with family members who are still waiting in refugee camps.

• Privately sponsoring refugees not only provides the refugees an opportunity for a life of safety and hope, but is also an extremely rewarding experience for the sponsors and can result in life-long friendships.

• The criteria to sponsor refugees may not be as complicated as you think. Any group (of at least 5) Canadian Citizens and/or Permanent Residents who are at least 18 years of age and live in the same community can become sponsors. The commitment of the group is to provide financial and settlement support for up to 12 months.
*There are other private sponsorship models, such as the BVOR cost-sharing program (where the Government of Canada and private sponsors share the financial support comittment). For more information visit

Still unsure how you can help? The following video may help you envision how everyday Canadians can make a huge difference!
